You can purchase and download both from the App Store in your Dock. Both have the ability to export files as Word and Excel if you need to send files to other people who don't have Macs. Or, you can purchase Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, which contains both Word and Excel. After disturbing google, I discovered that OpenOffice for Mac can open excel files that are saved in xlsx format. I downloaded and installed it on my Macbook Pro and I now use it create and edit Excel files. You can download the app at no cost at openoffice.org. Excel on MacBook Pro Discussion I was wondering if excel is quick enough to process very large spreadsheets on the latest MacBook Pro with a dual-core 2.3GHz i7 and 8GB of RAM (Cheapest model) or is it better to invest in a more expensive one.
Apple has 'Pages' and 'Numbers' which are able to work with, respectively, Word and Excel files. You can purchase and download both from the App Store in your Dock. Both have the ability to export files as Word and Excel if you need to send files to other people who don't have Macs. Each is $20.
Or, you can purchase Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, which contains both Word and Excel. You can purchase and download it from the Microsoft website. It's $120 per computer, or $150 for three computers.

Macs don't come with that type of apps, so you have to purchase them. There are three options, but there are more if you want to have a look at these applications:
- Office for Mac > http://www.microsoft.com/mac
Macbook Pro Excel Performance
- Apple iWork, in the Mac App Store.
Excel On Macbook Air
- LibreOffice > http://www.libreoffice.org
Excel For Macbook
All of them are paid apps except LibreOffice, so you can start testing this application. Macs come with TextEdit, a basic text application that won't meet the requirements you want
